Arlington, are you sure you're prepared for this?
On the roads to the Pontiac Silverdome there was a mammoth traffic jam, caused in part by the motorcade of the then-vice president, George H.W. Bush. Detroit, we thereby concluded, is a lousy place to host a Super Bowl. Miami? A friend got mugged at a freeway exit. Atlanta? An icy, Super-sized mistake. You see, you can't win hosting a Super Bowl. If the weather doesn't sabotage five years of planning, the visiting media surely will. Thus, some of us swallowed with bittersweet milk the news last week that Roger Staubach will chair a committee that will attempt to bring Super Bowl XLV to the Cowboys' new Arlington stadium, the Jethrodome. Nothing against Roger, and certainly nothing against Arlington. But some of us have been to more than 20 of these Super Bowl things, and we've seen it happen.

It marks the 40th anniversary of the first AFL-NFL championship game, in which the Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in Los Angeles. This is the 9th Super Bowl hosted by South Florida (Orange Bowl – 5, Dolphin Stadium – 3). The city previously hosted Super Bowl II on Jan. 14th, 1968, Super Bowl III on Jan. 12th, 1969, Super Bowl V on Jan. 17th, 1971, Super Bowl X on Jan. 18th, 1976, Super Bowl XIII on Jan. 21st, 1979, Super Bowl XXIII on Jan. 22nd, 1989, Super Bowl XXIX on Jan. 29th, 1995 and Super Bowl XXXIII on Jan. 31st, 1999 Other Super Bowl host cities: New Orleans (9: Tulane Stadium 3, Louisiana Superdome 6); Los Angeles (7: Los Angeles Coliseum 2, Rose Bowl 5); Tampa Bay (3); San Diego (3); Atlanta (2); Houston (2); Arizona (1); Detroit (2: Pontiac Silverdome 1, Ford Field 1); Minneapolis (1); Stanford (1); Jacksonville (1).
Bikes primed for comeback
When calling to mind images of Chinese cities 30 or more years ago, you might remember streets teeming with bicycling commuters. "Those poor people," you probably once thought. "No Buicks big as a whale, no Pontiac Firebirds, not even a Gremlin." I know that's what I once thought. But I see things differently these days. I live in Atlanta. And like city-dwellers in most cities, what I see today —- quite literally —- is grayish-yellow air, particularly in the dog days of July/August. Not only that, of course, but I can also smell and taste this filthy air. And of course we all know about global warming. I'm not fully versed in the science, but I understand the evidence points overwhelmingly to our fondness for internal combustion as the culprit.

Take-Two Interactive has announced that their 2nd Annual Pontiac Virtual NCAA Final Four Tournament registration is now open. Even though all eyes are on football this week, we are just one month away from March madness and the NCAA Tournament. While the athletes are on the courts, gamers can take each other on online with College Hoops 2K7 for a chance show off their skills at the NCAA Final Four Tournament in Atlanta. Four finalists will take each compete for a brand new Pontiac G5 GT. "The NCAA Final Four is where college spirit combines with raw talent to create an atmosphere that is unrivaled in the sports world," said Erik Whiteford, vice president of marketing for 2K Sports. "We wanted our fans to experience the same rush that the NCAA student athletes do when they hit the court by teaming up with Pontiac for the second year to bring the tournament to the virtual court with College Hoops 2K7." To participate in the challenge, gamers with an Xbox Live Gold account need to register online and compete in 10 online ranked games for College Hoops 2K7 on either the Xbox or Xbox 360 over Xbox Live before March 10th.
