Hanley Ramirez did a quick, visual reconnaissance of the sold-out crowd at the New York baseball writers annual dinner last week, seemingly overwhelmed by its size (1,500 people) and its passion (Jonathan Papelbon was thickly booed after being introduced). Ramirez, about to accept his award as the National League's Rookie of the Year, wasn't sure if he'd be harpooned, too, and for good reason. After all, the Marlins' shortstop was a one-time Red Sox prospect and is currently a Mets rival, But despite being deep in enemy territory, Ramirez won the public relations war by thanking Joe Girardi, his deposed Florida manager who was on the dais, telling Yankees-Mets audience that Girardi, "was always being there for me, never complained about giving me extra time." .
BENNY PARSONS 1941-2007 Driver thrived as broadcaster
Benny Parsons, a former NASCAR champion and Daytona 500 winner who gained an even wider following as a cheerful stock-car-racing broadcaster, died Tuesday of complications from lung cancer. He was 65. Parsons, a former taxi driver who won his series title in 1973, died in Charlotte, N.C., where he had been hospitalized since last month. A former smoker who quit the habit nearly 30 years ago, Parsons was diagnosed with cancer in his left lung in July. He underwent intensive chemotherapy and radiation treatments and appeared to be recovering, but relapsed. "Benny Parsons was a true champion -- both on the racetrack and in life," NASCAR Chairman Brian France said. "Benny loved our sport and the people that make it up and those people loved him." Parsons, known as BP throughout NASCAR, won 21 races in 526 starts from 1964 to 1988.

Locked in: Stratton guides Strattec through auto industry slump
Suppliers to the Big Three U.S. automakers, including Milwaukee-based Strattec Security Corp., have had to get leaner and leaner in recent years. Two of the Big Three, Ford and General Motors, have been hemorrhaging money and losing market share to foreign competitors for years. Through the third quarter of 2006, Ford had net losses of about $7 billion, and GM had net losses of about $3 billion. As a result of those problems, their suppliers are losing business too. Delphi Corp., one of the largest tier-1 suppliers to the auto market, declared bankruptcy last year. Strattec also has felt the pinch, with orders from its four biggest customers, the Big Three and Delphi declining during fiscal 2006. Strattec designs and builds locks, latches and related components for the automotive market.
