Racer Profile: Mike "Magic Shoes" McLaughlin
Mike McLaughlin was born October 6, 1956 in Waterloo, New York. McLaughlin began his career racing Supermodifieds and Modifieds on both dirt and asphalt where he gained the nickname Magic Shoes. In 1980, McLaughlin began competing in the NASCAR Featherlite Modifed Series. McLaughlin made his Busch Grand National Series debut in 1984 entering two events driving the No. 73 Boehler Speed Pontiac. In his first outing, he finished 14th in the Mello Yello 300 at Charlotte. In 1985, McLaughlin drove the No. 73 D&H Potato Farm Pontiac in the Goodys 300 at Daytona. A crash on lap 53 eliminated him from the event. He drove the No. 03 B.R.E Pontiac in the Winn Dixie 300 at Charlotte finishing 11th. In 1988, McLaughlin scored 16 victories in the NASCAR Featherlite Modifed Series to win the touring series championship.
Oakland County official proposes ban on trans fat
PONTIAC - A suburban Detroit official has proposed that Oakland County follow the example of New York City and bar restaurants from using artery-clogging trans fats. County Commissioner Marcia Gershenson introduced a resolution Thursday to restrict food service establishments in the county of 1.2 million north of Detroit from serving foods with trans fatty acids by December 2008. Trans fats are created when vegetable oil is treated with hydrogen to create foods with a longer shelf life. .
