Convicted Tulsa Murderer Escapes From Prison
A manhunt continued Tuesday for two Oklahoma prison escapees. The men broke out of the Great Plains Correctional Center in Hinton, about 50 miles west of Oklahoma City, Monday afternoon. Police say they've already committed a series of crimes, and News on 6 reporter Heather Lewin says authorities suspect they are headed for Tulsa. Prison officials say the two men turned up missing after an afternoon head count. Since their escape police say they've held two women hostage and stolen their cars. One of the inmates is a convicted killer sentenced to life for a murder he committed in Tulsa when he was 17 years old. It was November 1988 when a late night Tulsa cab ride turned deadly for the driver. Police say two teenage boys robbed 55-year old Eddie Elmore at gunpoint, one pulled the trigger killing the taxi driver for $30.
Two escapees accused of abduction, robbery
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Authorities are looking for two inmates who escaped from a prison in southwestern Oklahoma, allegedly abducted one woman and broke into the home of another. Officials at the Great Plains Correctional Center in Hinton say 35-year-old Charles McDaniels and 23-year-old Tony Ellison were found to be missing from a 4 PM head count. Authorities allege the men broke into a Hinton residence, abducted a female resident and drove her and her vehicle into Oklahoma City, where they broke into a northwest side home. Oklahoma City police Sergeant Keith Vance says the men allegedly broke into the home, took the first victim inside and then robbed the home's resident of her vehicle. Department of Corrections spokesman Jerry Massie says McDaniels is serving a life in prison term for murder out of Tulsa County and Ellison is serving five years for concealing stolen property and other convictions, including escape from a jail.
Half of Pontiac kindergarteners not ready for first grade
PONTIAC — About half of the kindergarten students at public schools in Pontiac are not prepared to move onto first grade and school officials think that was caused – and can be helped – by a change in class sizes.District 429 Superintendent Steve Graham said school officials knew the class was low functioning at the start of the year and prepared by adding two classes. But several children registered late and that affected the small class sizes the district had hoped would aid 162 kindergartners, who are divided into eight classes.“The additional children meant we didn't have the small class sizes that we wanted," Graham said. “We don't want to retain the students because we don't know what the incoming class will be like."Holding the children back is not an option because of the number of failing students.
