GM offers cash to clear out 2006, 2005 models
General Motors Corp., the world's largest automaker, is offering a $750 bonus to buyers to clear new 2006- or 2005-model cars and trucks from dealer lots. The program runs through Feb. 14, John McDonald, a spokesman for the Detroit-based company, said in an interview today. Those models account for less than 10 percent of GM's inventory, which was 1.05 million vehicles at the end of December, he said. ``We're not too overstocked on those, but anything you can do to help move them is great,'' said Guy Sensiba, a sales manager for Gunn Pontiac-GMC Truck in San Antonio. GM is also offering $200 to salespeople and $50 to sales managers for each of those models sold, Sensiba said. McDonald declined to confirm that. The incentive program was reported earlier today by Automotive News.
Off-duty cop taken to hospital after pileup
An off-duty San Antonio police detective was airlifted to University Hospital on Friday after the driver of a white station wagon lost control, causing a five-vehicle accident. Detective Michael Helle was in stable condition late Friday night. Two other drivers were also hospitalized, no one with life threatening injuries. Police said the station wagon's driver hit his brakes as traffic slowed on Interstate 10 at the De Zavala exit around 5 p.m., but the driver lost control spinning across the highway and onto its far left shoulder. The driver of a Land Rover swerved to avoid the station wagon slamming into the detective's car. In turn the detective's car struck a Ford F-150 and a Pontiac Sunfire. Police are searching for the driver of the white station wagon who fled the scene.
