Forward's dad a Super Bowl hero
STOCKTON - Dan Bunz routinely drives down from his Rocklin area ranch to watch his daughter Courtney play basketball for Pacific. Bunz is becoming a regular around here, but some don't know the big man in blue jeans pacing the concourse at Spanos Center made one of the great plays in Super Bowl history 25 years ago today. The San Francisco 49ers were backed against their goal line with 249-pound fullback Pete Johnson and the Cincinnati Bengals bearing down on them. Bunz, a backup linebacker out of Long Beach State, was on the field at the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan that day during a key third-quarter sequence. On third-and-goal from the San Francisco 1-yard line, Bengals running back Charles Alexander caught a pass in the right flat. Bunz closed quickly, and they collided with flashbulbs popping and hearts stopping in two success-starved cities.
Pontiac frosh take third place
PEORIA - Pontiac had no individual champions but the team placed third at the Woodruff Freshman Invitational swim meet on Wednesday.Cody Leach was part of the two highest placing events for the Indians. Leach was second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.24 seconds. He anchored the 200 freestyle relay team, with Ian Boyce, Bryce Davis and Tyler Griswold, to a runnerup time of 1:51.93.Leach, Griswold, Nic Hart and Ryan Arseneau combined to place fourth in the 200 medley relay (2:12.34). Also placing fourth for the Indians were Boyce (150 free, 1:36.4; 400 free, 4:46.07) and Leach (100 individual medley, 1:07.62). .

Newkirk bail denied
The Wingate man, who faces charges after crashing his car into a group of motorcycles in October that resulted in the deaths of three people, will remain in jail without bond. That was the determination of Montgomery County Superior Court 1 Judge David Ault at a hearing Thursday. "The motion is denied," Ault said. "You had the privilege of (bond) and you've shown you are a risk to the community." Rodney A. Newkirk, 25, was out of jail on bond for the incident until he was arrested again Nov. 3 on separate charges. He has been in the Montgomery County Jail since. The public defender for Newkirk, had filed a motion seeking bond. "We request Mr. Newkirk be granted bond or be on house arrest," Sarah Houston Dicks said during the hearing. Dicks also used Newkirk's boss at Horner Pontiac-Buick-GMC, Steve Smith, as a witness.
